Rochsburg Castle
Sachsen · Germany · Castle
Around the castle above the Zwickauer Mulde a burning monk is said to appear at night – a fiery glow that has frightened travellers for centuries.
Schloss Rochsburg rises on a rocky spur high above the river Zwickauer Mulde in central Saxony. The area's best-known legend concerns the burning monk: night-time travellers have seen a great fiery glow on the hill by Rochsburg which, at close range, revealed itself as a man engulfed in flames. According to the tale, a monk from a vanished Franciscan monastery nearby committed a grave sin and must walk in fire until he has atoned for it. The legend was so well known that everyone in the neighbouring villages could name the phenomenon. The castle itself has embraced its reputation, hosting exhibitions on ghosts and hauntings within its old walls.
