Mount Watzmann
Bayern · Germany · Natural site
Berchtesgaden's mightiest mountain is said to be a petrified royal family – cruel King Watzmann, his wife and their seven children.
According to old Alpine legend, a king named Watzmann ruled the Berchtesgaden lands so cruelly that even his wife and children joined his bloody hunts. When the king's hounds tore a shepherd family to death, the dying mother cursed him – and God turned the entire royal family to stone. Today the Watzmann rises with its peaks as the king himself, beside the Watzmannfrau and the row of seven children between them. When storms roar around the east face, it is said to be the petrified king's rage still rumbling. That same east wall has claimed the lives of more than a hundred climbers, which has only deepened the mountain's dark reputation.
