The men of Rudsvika fell to quarrelling and cursing over cards — until a card dropped and a small black man with a horseshoe showed under the table.
In Rudsvika in Eidskog some men sat playing cards one evening. The game set them quarrelling, and they swore and grew loud. Then a card fell to the floor, and as one of them bent for it he caught sight of a small black man under the table — the first thing he saw was the horseshoe. A moment later the Evil One was gone. Much the same was said to have happened at Langfoss, where he sat as a black dog and was about to make off with a man, until the parish priest known as Vingerstitten came to the farm. "Now comes Vingerstitten!" cried the Evil One, and vanished.
