House of the Demon (Gràcia)
Barcelona · Spain · House
The devil faces on the facade are the receipt, say the neighbours in Gràcia – here a ruined businessman pledged his soul in 1892 and won the lottery.
On Carrer de Josep Torres in the Gràcia district stands a house whose facade is adorned with images of the devil – and around it the neighbourhood has spun its own Faust legend. In 1892 the businessman Atzeries is said to have stood on the edge of ruin. In despair, the story goes, he promised his soul to the Adversary in exchange for salvation – and shortly afterwards won the top prize in the lottery. In thanks, or as a receipt, he had the devil's face mounted on his newly built house. Neighbours have for generations described a peculiar stillness around the building, as if street noise never quite reaches it, and at night the shadows of the devil figures are said to shift in the lamplight. The house is still known simply as the House of the Demon.
