The servant girl Lucie starved to death in the clock tower — and became one of France's most famous ghosts.

Château de Veauce in the Allier traces its origins to the 9th century and is home to "fair Lucie", one of the best-known ghosts in France. Lucie was a young servant girl courted in the mid-1500s by the baron Guy de Daillon; his jealous wife had her locked in the clock tower, where she died of cold and starvation. Her pale figure has been said to drift through the tower ever since, and in 1984 a France Inter radio team claimed to have captured her on film during a night vigil. The castle has fallen into disrepair but opens periodically for visits and events.
