Pflixbourg Castle

Countess Stéphanie de Ferrette still mourns her lost loved ones in the ruin — a harmless but inconsolable white lady.

Pflixbourg is a 13th-century castle ruin on a wooded height above Wintzenheim near Colmar, with a distinctive round keep. The ruin is said to be haunted by Countess Stéphanie de Ferrette, who lived here in the 13th century and, according to legend, lost those dearest to her to misfortune: she now wanders the ruin as a white lady, harmless but inconsolable, forever weeping for the ones she lost. Hiking trails from Wintzenheim lead up to the freely accessible ruin — at its most beautiful, and eeriest, in twilight mist.
