At the crossroads outside Elmina, a bewildered ghost is said to pace back and forth, unable to choose between Elmina and Cape Coast.

Fante tradition tells of a ghost that wanders to and fro at night at the junction outside Elmina, singing its plaintive question: shall it go to Cape Coast, or to Elmina? The legend carries a heavy memory – both roads once led to the coastal slave forts, and the ghost's eternal indecision has been read as a memorial to all those who were taken that way and never returned. The tale was made famous by Ama Ata Aidoo's 1965 play 'The Dilemma of a Ghost' and remains a living Ghanaian byword for anyone unable to make up their mind. The crossroads is thus one of West Africa's best-known ghost sites in oral tradition.
