The stone at Larabanga refused to be moved – every morning it lay back in its place, until the road finally had to be built around it.

When a road was being laid past the village of Larabanga in northern Ghana in the 1950s, a large stone blocked the route and the workers rolled it aside. The next morning, legend says, the stone was back in exactly the same spot – and so it went for three days, until the road builders gave up and let the road curve around it. The stone lies there still, close to Larabanga's famous mud-and-stick mosque, one of the oldest in Ghana. To the villagers, the Mystic Stone is a sacred site and proof that the land watches over its own.
