Demeter sat down at this well in her grief while her daughter was gone — and Athenians said whoever sat there never quite got free again.

Just inside the great gateway of Eleusis lies a round, stone-lined well with a beautiful name: Kallichoron, the well of the fair dances. According to the Homeric Hymn to Demeter this is where the goddess sat down, old and unrecognised, while searching for her abducted daughter Persephone, and it was around the well that the women of Eleusis afterwards danced for her. The well counted as the most charged point of the sanctuary outside the initiation hall itself, the place where grief entered the world and where the turning of the year was explained. Ancient writers spoke of it as a threshold: here the everyday ended and what could not be retold began. The dry well is still visible near the entrance.
