At the corner of Profiti Ilia and Markou Botsari in Chalandri stands the villa that belonged to Gina Bachauer, one of Greece's most celebrated pianists. She was found dead in the house shortly before a major recital at the Herodion, and ever since the neighbourhood has kept its own account of what remained. Neighbours describe piano melodies pressing out through shuttered windows of a house where nobody lives and no instrument stands, and a woman in black mourning dress moving slowly among the wild trees of the garden. She is said to pause, turn towards the street, and then be gone. The villa has stood empty for decades and Athenians count it among the city's surest haunted houses.
