The nymphs took whoever passed at noon — and in the ravine below lived Panoli, the blind woman groping her way along the walls.

The hill between Thiseio and the Pnyx is called the Hill of the Nymphs, and for centuries the name was a warning. Athenians said the nymphs, whom they called kalokyrades, lived in the natural hollows of the rock, and that you should not pass at midday when they were strongest — anyone who did might be nymph-taken and come home without speech. On the western side lay the ravine where three wicked sisters were said to live: Panoli, Cholera and Evlogia, the personifications of plague, cholera and smallpox. Panoli was described as a blind woman groping along the house walls, which is why Athenians believed that staying indoors could keep her away — folk belief's own quarantine. The chapel of Agia Marina was later built on the rock.
