In Mets, above the Ilisos stream, lie the remains of one of the loveliest ancient temples of Athens, raised to Artemis Agrotera. The building was pulled down in the eighteenth century and its stones carried away, and that is where the local legend begins. Athenians speak of "the old woman's shadow" — an elderly figure who comes slowly up the street with a lit candle and warns whoever she meets that the ground here has been cursed since the temple was despoiled. She speaks calmly rather than threateningly, and anyone who answers finds nobody there when he turns round. The candle is sometimes said to be seen alone, without a bearer, drifting along the house walls. It is among the oldest legends still told in this part of Athens.
