The Haunted Shirt of Distomou Street (To stoicheiomeno poukamiso)
Attika · Grekland · Haunted site
The man burned to death on Easter night with his candle in hand. A shirt still hangs in a cupboard — and passers-by smell smoke and incense.
On Distomou Street in Piraeus, the neighbourhood story goes, lived a man who cursed and terrified the district and who died in a fire on the night of the Resurrection, just as he crossed his own threshold with a lit Easter candle. The flat is said to have stood dark and empty afterwards, and those who passed at night claimed to smell smoke and incense in the middle of the street. The building was eventually demolished, but the legend refused to go with it. On the spot a wooden cupboard still holds a single shirt, untouched, as if its owner had only stepped out. The shirt has become one of Piraeus's most widely shared mysteries, and people come simply to check whether it is still hanging. It is.
