The Athanasopoulos House (Oikia Athanasopoulou)
Attika · Grekland · Haunted house
On Charokopou Street the builder Dimitris is heard at night begging two women for his life — the same words, in the same order, every time.
Among the old houses of Kallithea is one the neighbourhood has walked around for generations. It belonged to the builder Dimitris Athanasopoulos, who according to Athenian legend was murdered inside his own home. What is said to remain is not a figure but a voice: at night he is heard pleading with two women to spare him, the same sentences in the same order, until it stops and begins again. Neighbours describe the sound as coming from the stairwell rather than from any room, and say dogs refuse to pass the door after dark. The story appears in most Athenian round-ups of the city's stoicheiomena spitia, its haunted houses, and the building still stands in the streets around Charokopou.
