The Typaldos Tower (Pyrgos Typaldou)

Attika · Grekland · Tower

Four times the builders have walked away from the neo-Gothic tower near Amerikis Square. Locals say whoever still lives inside dislikes being disturbed.

On Patision Street, a stone's throw from Amerikis Square, a neo-Gothic tower rises with pointed windows and battlements, built in 1914 for the Cephalonian Typaldos family. After a break-in in 1993 the house was emptied and has stood uninhabited ever since, despite being listed in 2008 and despite repeated plans to turn it into a cultural centre. The neighbourhood's explanation is simple and stubborn: the spirits in the tower do not want workmen. Every time restoration is due to start something intervenes — funds vanish, ownership snarls, the scaffolding stands empty. Passers-by point at windows where lights are said to move floor by floor in a building with no electricity.
