Daphni Monastery in Chaidari west of Athens was built in the 11th century on top of an ancient temple of Apollo, along the Sacred Way to Eleusis, and its golden mosaics have earned it UNESCO World Heritage status. Stories have long circulated of monk-like figures appearing in the colonnades only to vanish a moment later, and of mysterious underground passages beneath the church. Its layered history of pagan cult, monastic life and a spell as a psychiatric asylum lends the site a strangely heavy calm. Visitors describe footsteps and a sense of presence beneath the silent vaults.
