The Red House (Longos Mansion)

Centralmakedonien · Greece · House

Thessaloniki's red merchant palace is wrapped in the city's most stubborn rumours — a family curse and vampire-like beings at night.

The dark-red brick mansion on Agia Sofia square was built in 1926 by architect Leonardo Gennari for the Longos textile family. When the family was ruined shortly afterwards, talk of a curse on the house began, and generations of Thessalonians have since told of vrykolakas — the vampire-like revenants of Greek folklore — and strange figures behind the empty windows. For decades the building stood largely deserted amid the bustle of the city centre, which only thickened the rumours. The Red House is considered Thessaloniki's most talked-about haunted address.
