In the palace on Szent György tér, Count Móric Sándor was born in 1805 — the man Pest-Buda called Ördöglovas, the Devil's Rider. He drove a four-in-hand down the steep stone stairway of Castle Hill, jumped his horse over loaded peasant carts, and had his household painter record the feat. His own stable master is said to have declared: that is no man, that is the devil. Popular belief took him at his word and held that the count had ridden a bargain with the evil one, and that anyone passing the palace after dark may hear hooves and wheels striking steps where no horse goes any more. Fate fed the legend: in 1850 he was thrown from his carriage at full speed and struck his head so badly he was never himself again. Today the palace is the president's residence, and the guards say nothing about the steps.
