For two weeks stones rained on the milk-seller's house. Not a pane was left whole — and nobody saw where they came from. The city was sure it was a restless spirit.

One of Budapest's oldest poltergeist stories played out in Ferencváros at the house of the milk-seller Mária Stocker. For fourteen days and nights stones hailed against the building until not a single pane of glass was left whole. Crowds gathered in the alley, police and newspapermen kept watch, but nobody could say where the stones came from or who threw them — they seemed to fall out of the air against the same wall again and again. The city was convinced a restless spirit was behind it. In the end the case was unravelled: the baker Károly Fett was responsible, having devised an ingenious method for driving unwelcome eyes away from his own home. The alley keeps its name, and the story with it. Nobody in the quarter dared sleep with a window open that spring, and the papers followed every night.
