Before the battle of Mogyoród in 1074, Duke László is said to have had a vision: an angel descended and set the crown on his brother Géza's head. Géza vowed to build a church for the Virgin if he won. He won — and when the brothers looked for the site, a stag stepped from the forest with burning candles in its antlers, walked ahead of them and halted at a spring. The shrine was raised there, and the place has been called Hétkápolna, the Seven Chapels, ever since. Pilgrims still come to the spring beneath the church to wash their eyes in the water, and a row of pillars marking Mary's seven joys and seven sorrows leads to the door. On quiet evenings, candle-flames are said to be seen among the trees by the pond. The chapels have been rebuilt several times, but the spring has never run dry.
