At the lonely farm of Hultungs in Bunge lived Per, a feared and cunning man who had grown weary of his wickedness and meant to end his life. An old maid keeping watch found him up in an oak with the noose ready, and at the trunk sat a black hound with burning eyes – the Evil One himself, waiting to seize his soul. When Per heard this he climbed down, promised to mend his ways, and became a gentler man.
