At lonely Hultungs in Bunge on Gotland lived a farmer named Per, feared and ill-reputed for his sorcery. Weary of his own wickedness, he climbed a great oak one day to take his life, but his old servant woman reached him in time and called out. Then she saw a huge black dog sitting beneath the tree, glaring with fiery eyes, the devil ready to seize his soul. Per climbed down, repented, and lived more gently ever after.
