At Aughrim in Galway in 1691 was fought the bloodiest battle ever waged on Irish soil, with some 7,000 men killed as the Jacobites were crushed by the army of William III. The dead were left to rot unburied in the fields, and in the dip known as the Bloody Hollow the sounds of battle are said to return: screams, the clash of steel and the cries of the wounded. Most famous is the tale of a soldier's faithful dog, which for months refused to leave its master's body, guarding it until it too died. The dog's ghost is said to still sit on the spot where its master fell, its desolate howl carrying across the fields at night.
