Newbridge was built in 1747 for Charles Cobbe, later Archbishop of Dublin, and is reckoned the most intact Georgian house in Ireland — the family's furniture and paintings still stand in its rooms. The legend of the estate concerns one of its earlier masters. At midnight Mr Cobbe is said to drive up to the front door in a coach drawn by six headless horses, round the house and vanish into the park. The coach rolls in silence; the only sound is the gate opening and closing again. In a later version the equipage has stopped appearing altogether and only the gate is left — a creak and a clap in the dark at a gate nobody has touched. He bought the estate in 1736 as a retreat from the city, and the family's descendants are on the grounds still.
