Ireland's oldest inn, tracing its origins to 1198 with the present house dating from 1754, stood by the ford over the Liffey and was for generations a haunt of conspirators. Here Robert Emmet planned the rising of 1803, deliberately taking the room that overlooks the entrance so he could see who came up Bridge Street. The rising failed, Emmet was taken and executed that September, and where his remains went nobody knows. Tradition says he returned to his old corner of the bar and sits there with his eyes on the door, still keeping watch for his enemies. By a grim irony, the hangman himself is said to have been a regular in the same room. Drinkers have said they saw a man in a dark coat in that corner and found it empty on walking over.
