Buck Whaley won a wager by leaping from the second-floor window. His figure still paces the same old nightly round down to Cuffe Street.

The house was built in 1765 for Richard Chapell Whaley and became home to his son Thomas, known in Dublin as Buck Whaley. He was a member of the Hellfire Club, gambled for absurd sums, and won a bet by leaping from the second-floor drawing room window onto the roof of a passing carriage. Another wager took him on foot to Jerusalem and back. He died at thirty-four, and the legend holds that he asked to be buried in Irish soil — so earth from Ireland was carried to his grave. Ever since, his figure is said to walk his old daily round from the door of the house along the Green and down toward Cuffe Street, always in the same direction. The Dublin Hellfire Club met at times in this house, and rumours about its upper rooms clung to the address for years.
