The white lady still waits on the bridge for the husband the sea took. On Halloween she is said to throw whoever sees her onto the rocks.

The footbridge in Ardgillan demesne was built by the railway company so the estate could reach Barnageera Beach, and its steep flights gave it the name the Lady's Stairs. The legend says the master of the house swam in the sea every day. One evening he did not come back, and his wife went out onto the bridge to wait for him. He had already drowned, but she stood there night after night until the waiting killed her. Since then the white lady is seen on the bridge, facing the water. Tradition ties her to Lady Langford, who drowned off the shore in 1853, and warns particularly of Halloween: whoever meets her then is said to be lifted and thrown onto the rocks. The bridge was damaged in 2005, restored, and reopened in 2007.
