A blinding light rises from the lock and disorients whoever crosses in the dark. The old lock keeper is blamed for seven deaths since 1861.

At Portobello Harbour the bridge crosses the canal lock, six metres deep between its gates. On 6 April 1861 the horses of an omnibus took fright on the rise of the bridge, the vehicle reversed through the rail, and six passengers drowned in the lock while people stood watching from the quay. Witnesses said a strong light rose from the water and took human shape. Dublin's explanation was an old lock keeper dismissed for drunkenness who drowned himself in his own lock; ever since, he is said to appear as a blinding glare that disorients whoever passes in the dark and pulls them over the edge. Seven drownings have been laid to his account since the accident. The bridge is formally La Touche Bridge, but in Dublin it is Portobello.
