In the porch of St Audoen's lies an early Christian grave slab that Dubliners call the Lucky Stone. It has been stolen again and again since the fourteenth century, yet always returns; thieves who brought it back claimed it grew heavier the further from the city they carried it. A watchman reported that the stone glowed in the dark and took human form after nightfall, and workmen who tried to break it with a sledgehammer said it cried out, moaned and rocked from side to side. In 1888 it was fixed in its present place with iron clamps. Outside the walls walks the Green Lady, whom tradition identifies as the brothel keeper Darkey Kelly, executed in 1761. She was burned after five bodies were found in her cellar.
