Junior Dean Edward Ford was shot through his own window in 1734. In powdered wig and gown he still walks at dusk toward Botany Bay.

On the night of 7 March 1734 a band of drunken students forced the front gate and smashed the windows of Edward Ford, the feared Junior Dean who lodged in the Rubrics, the oldest building in the college. Ford answered by firing his pistol into the dark and wounded one of them. The students fetched weapons of their own and shot him where he stood in the open window. Dying, he refused to name anyone: he said he did not know who they were, and that God forgave them as he did himself. Ever since, generations of students have told of Ford appearing at dusk along the face of the Rubrics in powdered wig, gown and knee breeches. He walks silently toward Botany Bay and thins into the air before he reaches it.
