Skryne Castle

Meath · Ireland · Castle

Lilith Palmerston runs screaming through the upper floor clutching her throat — as on the night Phelim Sellers choked her to death there.

The house stands below Skryne Hill, neighbour to Tara, and its legend is among the harshest in Meath. In the eighteenth century the young Lilith Palmerston lived here. A neighbouring landowner and widower, Phelim Sellers, fixed on her and turned violent when she refused him. When he learned she meant to flee to Dublin he came for her one night when she was alone in the house and choked her. He was hanged for it. Ever since, those who have lived in the house tell of a woman in white running through the upstairs rooms with her hands at her throat and a scream that carries down the stairwell. A silent nun and a cloaked man with a hound are also said to belong to the house. The house is private, but Lilith's story is among the most told in Meath.
