Glendalough

Wicklow · Ireland · Monastery

Kathleen followed Kevin all the way up to the cliff cave. She lies under the Upper Lake and walks among the ruins as a lady in red.

The monastic valley was founded in the sixth century by St Kevin, who first lived as a hermit in a cleft in the rock high above the Upper Lake, the spot called St Kevin's Bed. Legend tells of Kathleen, a young woman of the district who became obsessed with him and followed him everywhere. In the milder version Kevin drove her off with nettles until she came to her senses. In the dark one she climbed all the way to the cave, and he pushed her from the mountainside so that she fell into the lake and drowned. Since then she is said to walk the ruins as a lady in red and to be glimpsed beneath the water, and the Wicklow press has reported such encounters. St Kevin's Bed is still visible from the lake, a cleft high in the rock face.
