Visitors to the cells of Dagshai jail report the same things: an inexplicable chill in certain rooms, fleeting shadows in the corridors and the unpleasant sense of someone standing right behind them. Worst are the notorious dark cells, where prisoners were held in total blackness until they broke.

The T-shaped building was raised by the British in 1849 in the garrison town of Dagshai in the Himalayan foothills. Its inmates included Irish soldiers of the Connaught Rangers after the 1920 mutiny — and one of them, James Daly, was executed here by firing squad; he was the last British soldier put to death for mutiny. The jail is a museum today, and the whole of Dagshai is counted by many among India's most haunted places.
