Tunnel No. 103
Himachal Pradesh · Indien · Tunnel
In the railway tunnel closest to Shimla, a chatty British gentleman is said to fall in step with walkers – until he dissolves into the dark.
Tunnel 103 through Inverarm Hill is the last tunnel on the historic Kalka–Shimla railway before trains roll into Shimla. For generations, townspeople have spoken of a British gentleman in old-fashioned clothes who strikes up conversation with anyone walking the track – and vanishes mid-sentence. Others claim to have met a mother in a black sari cradling a sick child, and a young woman who walks straight through walls and trees before plunging into a well beside the line. The tunnel is still in daily use, and engine drivers prefer to pass through without stopping.
