Golconda outside Hyderabad was one of India's mightiest fortresses and the hub of the world's diamond trade – the Koh-i-noor among its stones. The fort is linked to Taramati, a celebrated courtesan of the 17th-century Qutb Shahi court, and night guards say the ring of her anklet bells can be heard around the pavilion where she danced, long after the gates are locked. Visitors have described dancing female figures, screams from empty halls and objects hurled about in the fort's old pigeon house. The rumours are so persistent that entry after sunset is forbidden.
