Founded in the 1870s as one of Bombay's great textile mills, Mukesh Mills was gutted by fire in 1982 and has stood ever since as a soot-blackened ruin by the sea in Colaba. The ruin quickly became a favourite backdrop for Bollywood – and the stories followed just as fast. An actress is said to have suddenly spoken in a distorted male voice mid-shoot, warning the crew to leave the mill; technicians tell of shadow figures caught on monitors, and some productions ban open flames on site so as not to provoke the spirits. Several stars reportedly refuse to return after dark.
