Chisinau State Circus
Chisinau · Moldavien · Abandoned site
Chisinau's decaying circus palace was built on top of the old city cemetery – and in its basements the crying of children is said to be heard.
The monumental State Circus of Chisinau was completed in 1981 and was once among the grandest circus buildings in the Soviet Union, but has stood largely abandoned since 2004. It was raised on the grounds of the old city cemetery, and by urban legend many graves were left beneath the foundations. Guards and visitors have told of children's crying rising from the basement vaults and of sounds drifting through the empty foyers. The derelict domed palace has become one of Moldova's most talked-about eerie places among urban explorers.
