The Red Mill, Chisinau

Chisinau · Moldavien · House

In the windows of Chisinau's Red Mill glimmers a white female silhouette – the girl said to have been walled in when the mill was built.

Moara Rosie, the Red Mill, was built at the foot of Pushkin Hill in Chisinau in the mid-nineteenth century and got its red fireproof brick after a great fire in the early 1900s. According to the city's most persistent legend, the builders walled a young girl into the structure so the mill would stand firm. A white female silhouette is said to flicker in the windows at night, and photographers claim that the very wall where the girl is said to rest never comes out sharp in pictures. A darker version of the tale holds instead that the owner slew his family and set the mill ablaze – and that the red brick recalls the blood.
