Kuklica
Kratovo · Nordmakedonien · Natural site
At Kuklica an entire wedding party stands petrified – the guests of the 'merry wedding' are still smiling in stone.
On a hillside near Kratovo rise more than a hundred stone pillars that from a distance resemble people in festive dress. According to legend a young man from the village was to be married, but the girl who loved him and was spurned laid a curse upon the wedding. At the very moment the bride and groom kissed, the curse struck – bride, groom and the whole party were turned to stone. The locals call the place the merry wedding, for the guests are said to be smiling still and the couple remains locked in a frozen embrace. Geologists date the pillars to ten million years of volcanic erosion, but in Kuklica they hold fast to the curse.
