The Church of St. Atanas in Varoš stands roofless – every attempt to lay a new roof is said to end in collapse.

In the village of Varoš below the Markovi Kuli fortress at Prilep, there are said to have once been 77 churches. One of them, dedicated to St. Atanas, still stands without a roof – and by local legend that is no accident. Time and again craftsmen are said to have tried to roof the church, but however skilfully they worked it came crashing down, as if an unseen hand tore apart by night what had been built by day. In the end the villagers gave up and left the church open to the sky. The curse is said to rest on it still, and the roofless church has become one of the Prilep region's most talked-about mysteries.
