Manoel Theatre
Valletta · Malta · Theatre
At Europe's third-oldest working theatre, actors see mist-like figures drift from the boxes when the house should be empty.
Teatru Manoel opened in 1732 and remains one of the oldest theatres in Europe still staging performances. Behind the gilded ornament and venerable boxes, actors and audience members alike report phenomena no one has explained: a mist-like figure seeming to seep out of one of the boxes, doors slamming shut on their own, and shadows crossing the stage after the house has emptied. Staff tell of footsteps in deserted corridors and a persistent feeling of being watched from the tiers. The stories have made the theatre a fixed stop on Valletta's ghost walks.
