Avocado Alley — Ciudad de México · Mexiko · Alley

Beneath the avocado tree in Coyoacán a soldier is said to have killed a child - and both spirits linger by the alley's little shrine.

This narrow, ivy-clad alley in Coyoacán's Santa Catarina quarter carries one of Mexico City's most ominous legends. In the 1930s a soldier is said to have met a young boy fascinated by his medals; in an inexplicable fury, the soldier killed the child beneath the avocado tree. In one version he built the small shrine, still lit by votive candles, out of remorse; in another he hanged himself from the same tree. Visitors describe an oppressive silence, sudden cold spots, a child's weeping and a small silhouette glimpsed at dusk. The alley is now an obligatory stop on Coyoacán ghost walks.
