The Chaukhandi necropolis east of Karachi was built between the 16th and 18th centuries as the burial ground of Sindhi and Baloch clans, its pyramid-shaped tombs carved from richly decorated sandstone. It is counted among Sindh's most haunted places: local tradition holds that the tombs heat up at night and give off a faint glow, and some claim the stones move in the darkness. Visitors are warned against entering the graveyard after moonrise, and guards tell of whispers drifting between the rows of graves. Rumours aside, the site remains a superbly preserved archaeological treasure.
