In the desecrated crypt of the vast baroque abbey, princes and monks lie without rest – and legend tells of the brother who slept for a hundred years.

The Cistercian abbey of Lubiąż is one of Europe's largest monastic complexes, with a princely crypt surpassed only by Wawel. After the Second World War the crypt was plundered and the monks' mummified remains desecrated – ever since, the dead are said to find no rest in the endless, half-abandoned corridors. The abbey also has the tale of Brother Eberhard, who fell asleep beneath an oak in the monastery fields and woke only after a hundred years; when the evening bell rang he dropped dead, released at last. Dark stories still swirl around the abbey's underground passages.
