A young woman was walled up for a forbidden love. When the plaster came down after the fire, the skeleton was still in the niche in black velvet.

The renaissance palace on All Saints' Square has been Krakow's city hall since 1864, and the clerks who work there call their ghost the Czarna Dama, the Black Lady. The legend says a young woman of the Wielopolski family was caught in an affair with a servant, killed, and bricked into a palace wall so that no scandal would ever leave the house. It stayed a story until the walls were opened up after the fire of the 1920s: in a first-floor room the workmen found a sealed niche and inside it the skeleton of a young woman, wrapped in the remains of a black velvet dress. Who she was has never been established. Long-serving officials describe her in the corridors late in the evening, and an electrician working after hours is said to have met her face to face.
