Quinta da Paulicea

Centrala Portugal · Portugal · Manor

In this abandoned manor in Águeda, where a whole family died of the Spanish flu, people hear screams, neighing horses and a piano playing by itself.

The Quinta da Paulicea in Águeda was the pride of a prosperous family until the Spanish flu swept through Portugal around 1918 and wiped out nearly the entire household – by tradition, only the son, known as Neca Carneiro, survived. Since the last owner passed away, the manor has stood decaying behind its rusted gates. Neighbours and the curious tell of screams in the night, the neighing of horses from long-empty stables, and piano notes drifting from the deserted parlour. Few dare approach the house after dark.
