At the Fountain of Tears, the red stains on the stones are said to be the blood of Inês de Castro, murdered here in 1355.
The Quinta das Lágrimas – the Estate of Tears – in Coimbra is forever bound to Portugal's most tragic love story. It was here that Inês de Castro was murdered in 1355 on the orders of King Afonso IV, because her forbidden love for the crown prince Pedro threatened the realm. At the Fonte das Lágrimas, visitors are still shown red stains on the stones said to be her blood, and the spring itself is said to have risen from her tears. Many who wander the leafy gardens, now part of a hotel, describe a sorrowful presence by the fountain.
