Every Sunday a devout boy burst out laughing mid-service – for only he could see the black figure painting the sleepers across the eyes.

In Kräklingbo church a pious, well-behaved boy could never keep from laughing during every Sunday service. Questioned by the priest, he explained that he alone saw a black, hideous man going about with a pot of paint and a brush, daubing the sleeping worshippers across the eyes. Each time the figure tried to paint the boy himself it stumbled and spilled the paint – and so he could not help but laugh.
