The skipper wished himself home to Amsterdam's square on Christmas Eve – and woke with his ship set on the lit square, the mate vanished.

A skipper from Amsterdam sailed the Spanish Sea on Christmas Eve and sighed to see Amsterdam's bright square. The mate said nothing but cast sleep over the whole crew. When they awoke the ship stood in the middle of the grandly lit square, and the mate was gone. The skipper understood he had had the Fiend himself for a mate, who had set the ship there during the Christmas night.
