The Priest Rynning and the Carriage Arms, Eidskog
Hedmark · Norway · Church
Mid-sermon the priest broke off and drove home – for a maid had read the devil loose from the black book.
One Sunday, while the priest Rynning stood on the pulpit in Matrand church, he suddenly stopped and drove home as fast as the horse could run to Skinnarbøl. One of his maids had found the black book and read the devil free. As the priest came onto the farm both carriage arms snapped, but he still managed to bind the devil by setting him to twist rope from gravel – an impossible task.
